Cumberland Landing sat on the Pamunkey River in Virginia, and in 1862 it served as a Union supply base for the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsula Campaign. Steamers brought food, ammunition and other supplies up the river to the landing, where they were moved to the troops on the surrounding ground. This picture is a stereograph, made from two glass negatives taken from slightly different positions so that viewers could see the scene in depth through a stereoscope. It was made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose each plate before it dried. The photographer is listed as James F. Gibson, born in 1828.
