Cumberland Landing sat on the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia, and in 1862 it served as a supply base for the Army of the Potomac during George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. The negative's caption identifies this view as an encampment at the landing, so the picture shows the tents and daily life of an army staging its movement up the peninsula toward Richmond. The record also notes that the image was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a prominent Civil War photographer, which is worth keeping in mind when weighing its origins. Glass stereograph negatives like this one were made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat and expose plates before they dried.
