Cumberland Landing, on the Pamunkey River in eastern Virginia, was a busy Union supply point in May 1862, when the Army of the Potomac was advancing up the Peninsula toward Richmond. This glass stereograph negative, made by the wet collodion process, shows a mixed group of civilians and soldiers there, and its original sleeve describes it simply as a group at Cumberland in May 1862. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a well-known Civil War photographer, but that attribution has since been set aside, so its maker remains uncertain.
