Dated June 4, 1864, this stereograph shows the ground at Cold Harbor, Virginia, the day after Union troops suffered heavy losses in a failed assault on Confederate lines there. The image was made as a glass negative using the wet collodion process, and its paired exposures were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Its label cites Miller's photographic history of the war, and the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution is now uncertain. Soldiers and tents in the scene show the camps and lines that held the position during the battle's long siege-like stalemate.
