Few early Civil War images show a camp this plainly, with canvas tents raised in the open woods and men lined up in front of them. The record dates it to 1861, the first year of the war, when Union regiments were still organizing and many camps were set up in a hurry under trees. The print is attributed to Alexander Gardner, who worked as a printer and photographer in the Civil War era, and the title was written by Library staff rather than the photographer. Its rows of tents and posed soldiers give a useful picture of how the early volunteer army lived before the hard campaigning of later years.
