Soldiers filling a water cart at Fredericksburg, Virginia, make an unusually ordinary subject for an 1864 Civil War photograph. The scene survives as two glass plates, the left and right halves of a stereograph pair meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain. Glass negatives made by the wet collodion process were the standard technology of the war years, and camp chores like this one show how the Army of the Potomac kept its men supplied.
