Few wartime views show the army's food supply as plainly as this one, which records a herd of cattle gathered for the Army of the Potomac at City Point, Virginia, a landing on the James River. The record dates the negative to 1861, but City Point became the Union's major supply base in 1864 and 1865, when Ulysses S. Grant made it his headquarters, so that date deserves a second look. Armies of the period often moved with live cattle that were slaughtered as needed, so herds like this one were essential to keeping troops fed. The picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of plates meant to be viewed through a hand stereoscope to give the scene a sense of depth.
