At City Point, Virginia, a Union supply depot on the James River, a Black soldier stands guard beside a 12-pounder Napoleon, a bronze smoothbore field gun that was among the most widely used artillery of the Civil War. In 1865 the depot served the armies besieging Petersburg and Richmond, so the scene shows the everyday work behind the front lines. The picture survives as a stereograph, two glass negative plates meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer considered certain.
