Ordnance Wharf at City Point, Virginia, was one of the busiest landings of the Union war effort, where shells and powder were unloaded and sent on to the armies besieging Petersburg. City Point served as the supply base for Ulysses S. Grant's forces from mid-1864 until the war ended, with its docks busy on the James and Appomattox rivers. The picture survives as a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass, split into left and right plates. Its caption dates it to 1864, while the catalog lists 1865, and the negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution the record now lists as former.
