Wagons of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Corps, drawn up at City Point, Virginia, are the subject of this 1865 view. City Point, on the James River, served as the Union Army's principal supply depot and headquarters during the Petersburg campaign, so the wagon trains seen here carried the rations, ammunition and forage that kept the lines supplied. The picture survives as a glass stereograph negative made in two plates, which were meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. The record notes that Alexander Gardner was formerly credited as its photographer.
