A wharf piled with army supplies at City Point, Virginia, sits on the James River near Petersburg. The image survives as a stereograph pair: two glass plates made with the wet collodion process, which were viewed together to give a sense of depth. The record dates it to 1861, though the site became one of the largest Union supply depots later in the war, and the photographer was once credited to Alexander Gardner. Stereographs like this one were popular in the 1860s, and they show how the war's logistics looked from the ground.
