Rows of army wagon wheels stacked in an open yard at City Point, Virginia, give this view a quieter subject than the battlefield scenes of the war. City Point, on the James River, served as the main Union supply base and as Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters during the siege of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865, receiving rations, ammunition and replacement equipment by river and rail. The picture survives as a stereograph pair on wet collodion glass plates, designed to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer considered certain.
