City Point, Virginia, was one of the busiest Union supply depots of the war, a landing on the James River where the Appomattox joins it. This stereograph records the transports moored there in 1865, when the Union armies were besieging Petersburg nearby. It is made from two glass wet-collodion plates, one for each eye, so that viewed through a stereoscope the vessels appear to stand in three dimensions. The negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading photographer of the war, though that attribution has since been questioned.
