A pair of glass plates, one for each eye, makes this view of transports on the James River at City Point, Virginia, meant to be seen in depth through a stereoscope. The original caption read "James River City Point Va.," and the name "Bermuda Hundred Landing" was later crossed out. City Point sits where the Appomattox River meets the James, and it grew into a major Union supply base and headquarters by 1864 and 1865. The photographer, James F. Gibson, was a working image-maker of the period, and his wet collodion negatives record the river traffic of the war years.
