This picture shows officers gathered on the deck of the USS Monitor, the Union ironclad that fought the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia to a draw at Hampton Roads in March 1862. The photograph was taken on the James River in 1862, when the Monitor was supporting Union operations during the Peninsula Campaign. Its maker, David B. Woodbury, was one of several photographers who documented the war's naval and army activity in Virginia. The image is on a glass negative made with the wet collodion process, which required the photographer to coat and expose each plate while it was still wet. Few photographs of the Monitor's crew survive, which makes this one a useful record of the ship's officers.
