A ten-inch Columbiad sits in a Confederate battery above the Dutch Gap Canal on the James River in Virginia, a spot that mattered because Union forces under Benjamin Butler dug the canal in 1864 and 1865 to shorten the river route past Confederate guns guarding the approach to Richmond. The Columbiad was a large smoothbore muzzle-loader and the standard heavy gun of coastal and river fortifications of the period. Photographs like this one, dated 1865, document the defenses that the Union army had to overcome along the James. The picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now uncertain.
