Few pictures from the war show a general's family at the front, and this stereograph pair records Brig. Gen. John A. Rawlins's wife and child at Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters at City Point, Virginia, in 1865. Rawlins served as Grant's chief of staff and was one of his closest advisers, and City Point, on the James River, was the Union's major supply base during the siege of Petersburg. The two glass plates were made with the wet collodion process, and James F. Gibson, a photographer who worked for Mathew Brady, is credited with the exposures. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images give the scene a sense of depth.
