City Point, at the junction of the James and Appomattox rivers, became Ulysses S. Grant's principal supply base and headquarters during the siege of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865, and this stereograph looks north along the rail line that carried men and matériel from its wharves to the front. The railroad was the lifeline of the Union army in the region, moving supplies that the river steamers unloaded at the docks. E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., a New York firm, published the stereo card so that viewers could see the scene in three dimensions, a popular way for Americans to follow the war from home.
