Taken at Cold Harbor, Virginia, in 1864, this wet collodion glass negative shows Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at his headquarters during the Overland Campaign. Grant's army had fought Robert E. Lee's forces through the Wilderness and Spotsylvania before reaching Cold Harbor in late May and early June, when a costly Union assault on June 3 failed within about an hour. The negative sleeve's caption is the main identifying text, and the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a photographer closely tied to the army's campaign coverage.
