Few images from the early war show ordinary soldiers at ease as plainly as this glass negative, labeled "Soldiers rest" and taken in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1861. Alexandria sat just across the Potomac from Washington and was occupied by Union troops within days of Virginia's secession vote, so it filled quickly with men in the first months of the conflict. The wet collodion process of the period required long exposures and a steady subject, which makes the relaxed poses of the men here especially worth noticing. The record also notes that the picture was formerly attributed to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, a reminder of how often early attributions shifted as the collection was studied.
