A stereograph of the interior of a slave pen in Alexandria, Virginia, made in 1861, shows a space where enslaved people were confined before being sold. Alexandria had long been a center of the domestic slave trade, and its pens held men, women and children awaiting buyers who would often take them to the Deep South. The picture dates from the first months of the Civil War, shortly after Union troops occupied the city in May 1861. The glass negative was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer considered certain, and the two halves were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope.
