The Marshall House was a hotel in Alexandria, Virginia, and in May 1861 it became the site of one of the war's first deaths to draw national attention. After Union Col. Elmer Ellsworth took down a Confederate flag from the hotel's roof, the owner, James W. Jackson, shot and killed him, and a Union soldier then killed Jackson. The glass negative, made with the wet collodion process common at the time, was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a photographer working in the Washington area during the war, though that attribution is no longer assumed.
