The stereograph records the headquarters of Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman at Fort Lyon, near Alexandria, Virginia, in 1861. That year the Union army was building earthen forts and camps around Washington and Alexandria, and Heintzelman commanded troops in that defensive line before the army advanced toward Manassas that summer. The picture was made from two glass plates using the wet collodion process, and the pair is meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth. Earlier catalogs credited the photographer as Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is now considered uncertain.
