This stereograph shows Fort Burnham, the earthwork known before the fall of 1864 as Fort Harrison, on the bluffs above the James River near Richmond. Confederate forces built it as part of the defenses protecting the capital, and Union troops captured it in late September 1864. The Union renamed it for Brig. Gen. Hiram Burnham, who was killed in the fighting. The image is made of two wet collodion glass plates, one for each eye, so a stereoscope could turn the pair into a single view with depth. Earlier catalogers credited the pictures to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer settled.
