Taken near Culpeper, Virginia, this stereograph shows General Henry Prince posed with his staff in September 1863. Culpeper lay in the Virginia Piedmont and was a focal point of troop movements that autumn, so portraits from the area offer a glimpse of officers at a moment of active campaigning. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, the standard field photography process of the time. Its record notes that the picture was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a Washington photographer, though that attribution is no longer accepted. Stereographs like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth.
