A stereograph of the residence of John Minor Botts, a Virginia lawyer and former congressman who opposed secession, shows a house in the countryside near Culpeper in 1863. Culpeper lay in the path of the armies in northern Virginia and changed hands several times during the war, so a view of a private home there records how the conflict reached ordinary estates. The image was made as a wet collodion glass negative, the demanding process of the period, which required photographers to coat and expose plates on the spot. Earlier catalogs credited the picture to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is uncertain.
