Gen. Benjamin Butler's staff quarters at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, offer an unusually domestic view of the war. In 1864 the peninsula where the James and Appomattox rivers meet served as the base of Butler's Army of the James, and its fortified lines held the position for months. The image survives as two glass negatives, one for each eye, which give depth when viewed together through a stereoscope. It was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the photographer known for his work with the Army of the Potomac, though that attribution is no longer accepted.
