Officers posed outside their quarters near a signal tower at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, make this stereograph distinct from the many battlefield and camp views in the collection. The scene was recorded in 1864, when Union forces under Benjamin Butler had dug in on the bend of the James River south of Richmond, and signal stations like this one relayed messages across the lines. Photographer James F. Gibson, who worked for Alexander Gardner's studio, made the image on a wet collodion glass negative, and the two plates together create a stereo pair meant for viewing through a stereoscope.
