Few views in this group show a signal tower, and this stereograph records one near Point of Rocks, Virginia, where the Potomac River cuts through a narrow gap in the Blue Ridge foothills. Armies on both sides relied on such towers, often staffed by signal corps men with flags and lamps, to pass messages across long distances faster than couriers could ride. The image was made in 1864 with the wet collodion process on glass, and its two plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, giving the tower a sense of depth. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, died in 1866.
