A signal tower on Elk Mountain in Maryland is the particular subject here, a structure set on high ground overlooking the Antietam battlefield. Signal stations like this one let Union officers relay messages by flag and lamp over long distances, so a post on a height could watch troop movements that were hidden from the ground. The glass negative dates to 1862, the year of the Antietam campaign, and belongs to the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection. The record notes that the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, who photographed the battlefield that year, though that attribution has since been revised.
