The Sherrick house stood near the Burnside Bridge over Antietam Creek, the crossing that Union troops under Ambrose Burnside fought to take on September 17, 1862. That battle near Sharpsburg, Maryland, remains the bloodiest single day in American military history. The picture was made on a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat and expose plates while still damp, and it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now considered uncertain. It offers a record of the landscape shortly after the fighting.
