Taken on the battlefield at Antietam in Maryland, this stereograph shows the dead left behind after the fighting of September 17, 1862, when Union and Confederate armies clashed near Sharpsburg in the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. The image survives as two glass negatives, one for each eye, which were viewed together through a stereoscope to produce a three-dimensional scene. The photographer was once credited to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution has since been set aside, so the maker is best regarded as uncertain. Wet collodion plates like these brought images of the war's human cost to viewers far from the front.
