A ditch on the right wing at Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, holds the Confederate dead in this view, made shortly after the battle of September 17, 1862. That day was the bloodiest single day in American history, and photographs taken in the days that followed were among the first to show the war's dead to the public. The image survives as two glass negatives, variant views of a stereograph, made by the wet collodion process, which required each plate to be coated and developed almost immediately. It was formerly credited to Alexander Gardner.
