Bodies of Confederate soldiers, gathered together for burial, are the subject of this 1862 stereograph pair. The fighting at Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day in American military history, and burial details worked in its aftermath to deal with the dead. The pair is made from two glass plates, one for each view, and a third variant plate also survives. Stereographs like this were viewed through a special lens to create a sense of depth, bringing scenes of the war's losses into parlors across the North.
