Few Gettysburg photographs are reproduced as often as this one, which shows a dead Confederate sharpshooter lying among the rocks at the foot of Little Round Top. It was made in the days and weeks after the fighting ended in early July 1863, while the field was still strewn with the dead. Historian William Frassanito credits Timothy O'Sullivan as the photographer, though Alexander Gardner claimed the view for his *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*. A clipping pasted to the mount names the soldier as Andrew Johnston Hoge, but that identification is not confirmed, and historians have long debated whether the body was moved for the composition.
