Few images from the war show the aftermath of a battle as plainly as this one, made at Corinth, Mississippi, on the morning after Confederate forces attacked the Union position there on October 3 and 4, 1862. The dead lie in front of Battery Robinette, a Union earthwork, and the glass negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be prepared, exposed, and developed while still wet. The caption on the negative sleeve identifies the scene, and earlier cataloging credited the work to Alexander Gardner, an attribution that has since been revised.
