Battery Lamb, the seaward face of Fort Fisher on North Carolina's coast, is the subject here, and the glass negative shows the earthworks that guarded the Cape Fear River approach to Wilmington, the Confederacy's last major open port for blockade runners. Union forces took the fort in January 1865 after a costly assault, and this 1865 view records its condition in the months that followed. The negative is a wet collodion plate, a process that required photographers to coat and expose the glass while it was still wet. Earlier cataloging credited Alexander Gardner, the Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been revised.
