The Beacon House on Morris Island, South Carolina, stands in this 1863 view as a battered landmark after the fighting for nearby Fort Wagner. Union forces attacked the Confederate fort in July 1863, and the struggle left the island's buildings scarred and the siege lines close by. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, a process that required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate within minutes, which made field work like this demanding. Mathew Brady's studio is credited with the photograph, and the scratched annotation naming Haas & Peale reflects the team that handled the negative.
