Fort Putnam's interior is the subject here, pictured on Morris Island, the sandy barrier island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor. Union forces had taken the island in 1863 after the long siege of Charleston, and by 1865 it was a fortified Union position. This stereograph was made from a wet collodion glass negative, and its two side-by-side views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth. E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm, published many such views of wartime sites, and the pair offers a close look at the earthworks as they stood near the war's end.
