Fort Fisher, guarding the approach to Wilmington, North Carolina, was the largest earthwork fortification in the Confederacy and the last major port the Union had to take to close off blockade running. This stereograph, made as a wet collodion glass negative in 1865, shows the fort's interior after the Union assault of January 1865, when a combined naval and army force finally overran its land face. Stereographs like this were sold in pairs to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving the ruined ramparts and their weight and depth to viewers at home.
