Few places in northern Virginia changed hands as often as Centreville, and this stereograph records one of the fortifications that rose there in 1862. Confederate troops left the town that March as Union forces advanced toward Manassas, and the Army of the Potomac then held the area and built earthworks to guard the approaches to Washington. The photograph is a wet collodion glass negative, a format that required photographers to coat and expose plates on the spot, and its paired views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope. It was made by James F. Gibson, a field photographer whose work documents the military landscape of the war.
