A dismounted mortar lying at Fort Pulaski, on Cockspur Island near Savannah, Georgia, makes this view more about aftermath than action: the gun has been pulled from its carriage and left among the fort's defenses. Union forces took the fort in April 1862 after a bombardment with rifled artillery, which breached its brick walls and showed that masonry fortifications were vulnerable to modern guns. The stereograph was made in 1862 by James F. Gibson, one of the photographers who recorded the captured works, using the wet collodion process of the period.
