Among the Fort Pulaski views, this stereograph focuses on a gun known as the Beauregard gun, a name linked to Confederate general P.G.T. Beauregard, who led Southern defenses on the coast in 1861 and 1862. The fort, which guarded the approach to Savannah, Georgia, surrendered to Union forces in April 1862 after their rifled artillery breached its brick walls. That result showed how quickly masonry fortifications could be overwhelmed by newer weapons. Made with the wet collodion process, the two glass plates were prepared and exposed on site, and viewed through a stereoscope they merge into a sense of depth around the gun.
