Few pictures in this group focus on a single piece of equipment as directly as this stereograph of a 6-pounder field gun, Model 1841, which the two side-by-side plates render in depth. The Model 1841 was the standard light smoothbore field piece of the U.S. Army, prized for mobility alongside infantry, and it saw service in both the Mexican War and the Civil War. The record gives no location, and the image is dated 1860, a year before the war began, so it shows the weapon in peacetime rather than in combat.
