A six-pounder Wiard gun, a light rifled piece, is the subject here, shown at the Washington Arsenal in 1862, the year the Union army was building up its artillery in the capital. Wiard guns were made by Norton Wiard's firm in Ohio and were among the many patterns the Army tested and issued during the war, with the six-pounder valued for its portability in field batteries. The picture was taken on a wet collodion glass negative, the process that dominated photography through the 1860s, which required the plate to be prepared and exposed while still damp. The photographer is credited as David B. Woodbury, who worked in Washington and documented military subjects during the conflict.
