The subject here is a government building in Washington, the home of the U.S. Clothing Department, which supplied uniforms and clothing to the Union Army during the final year of the Civil War. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop each plate before the emulsion dried. David B. Woodbury, who worked in Washington and died in 1866, made the negative, and it belongs to a group of Civil War glass plates now held by the Library of Congress. Its plain architectural subject offers a view of the wartime supply machinery behind the front lines.
