Few pictures in this set show a wartime headquarters at the moment of its occupation, and this one records the site of Gen. Gershom Mott's command in the Washington area in June 1865, weeks after Confederate armies had surrendered. Mott, a New Jersey officer, had led a division in the Army of the Potomac, and by then the camps and offices around the capital were being wound down as volunteer regiments mustered out. The image was made on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. It was taken by David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866.
