Samuel Arnold is shown seated at the Washington Navy Yard in this 1865 portrait, one of the men held there after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Arnold was among the conspirators who were tried by military commission that year, and he received a life sentence rather than execution. The image is a wet collodion glass negative, the standard process of the period, and the record credits the photographer David B. Woodbury, who made a series of portraits of the prisoners. Such pictures were part of the wider effort to document the trial's principal figures.
