Few images from the Lincoln assassination show one of the accused men this directly. David E. Herold, a young Maryland man who had joined John Wilkes Booth's plot to kidnap the president, was photographed at the Washington Navy Yard in 1865, while the conspirators were held there before their military trial. The picture was made by James F. Gibson on a glass wet collodion negative, a process that required the plate to be coated, exposed, and developed before it dried. Herold was hanged in July 1865 with three others convicted in the case.
