Taken at the Washington Navy Yard in 1865, this glass negative shows George A. Atzerodt, one of the men accused in the plot against Abraham Lincoln. Atzerodt had been assigned to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson on the night Lincoln was shot, but he abandoned the attempt and fled. After his arrest, he was held at the Navy Yard with the other accused conspirators while a military commission weighed their case. The wet collodion process required subjects to hold still through a long exposure, and portraits like this one circulated widely as the public followed the trial.
